SAN ANTONIO — A woman has been arrested after a 15-year-old boy fell out of a pickup truck and died at an east-side sports complex Memorial Day weekend.
Deon Joseph was riding in the back of the pickup on May 25 with three other boys, aged 14 and 15, when he fell out of the truck and suffered crush injuries to his chest. This was at the Wheatley Sports Complex on the east side.
First responders who arrived at the scened pronounced him dead from his injuries only a few minutes later. A police report says the 28-year-old female driver of the truck, Yvonne Haygood, stayed on scene until paramedics arrived, but took off before police got there.
The three other boys reported to officers that they and Deon asked the woman for a ride from a nearby apartment building, according to the arrest affidavit. The boys said they needed the ride because one of them had left their phone behind at the sports complex. They told officers they knew the woman from helping her move a few weeks earlier.
One of the boys positively identified Haygood as the driver of the pickup truck, according to the report.
A witness who was driving to a nearby convenience store spotted the vehicle moments before the accident. He told KENS 5 the driver of the truck was “doing donuts” in a field “with a bunch of kids in the back.”
Haygood is charged with “collision involving death.”
