Woman critically injured after being struck by train along I-35 on northeast side of town

Police say a woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a train near Interstate 35 Wednesday night.

SAN ANTONIO — A woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a train Wednesday night on the city’s northeast side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

The incident happened around 9:53 p.m. in the 6700 block of Interstate 35 North.

Police said officers were called to the scene for a major accident involving a pedestrian and a train.

According to investigators, the train conductor told officers he saw a person sitting on the tracks in a fetal position as the train approached.

The conductor initially believed the object on the tracks was a trash bag because it was not moving, even as the train sounded its horn.

Officials said the conductor repeatedly used the horn and attempted to brake the train but was unable to stop before making contact with the woman.

The victim, described as a woman believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Police have not released additional details about the victim or what may have led up to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
