Woman sentenced to 17 years on tampering with human remains charges

A witness later came foward with a recording where DeHoyos discussed moving, burning and burying the body, officials say.

KARNES COUNTY, Texas — A judge sentenced a Karnes County woman to 17 years in prison on a charge of tampering with human remains after a woman’s death in 2022.

In June 2022, law enforcement was tipped off that Shandi DeHoyos was allegedly trying to dispose of Minerva “Mickey’s” Rodriguez’s remains after she was murdered. Karnes County Sheriff’s Office, along with Floresville Police Department and the Texas Rangers, conducted a traffic stop on Highway 181. During a search of a vehicle, authorities found burned human bones.

Upon questioning, officials say DeHoyos denided any knowledge of the remains, but later, she admitted she witnessed the murder five or six weeks earlier and helped move the remains. A witness later came foward with a recording where DeHoyos discussed moving, burning and burying the body.

In October of this year, a Karnes County jury found her guilty on two counts, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. Tuesday, a judge imposed a sentence of 15 years for tampering with evidence and two years for abuse of a corpse.
