Worker dead after mudslide at sand plant in Atascosa County, officials say

Emergency crews responded to Signal Peak Silica of Atascosa Thursday morning.

SAN ANTONIO — One man is dead following an incident at a sand plant in Atascosa County Thursday morning, officials said.

Emergency crews responded to Signal Peak Silica of Atascosa around 9:30 a.m. near Highway 16 in northern Atascosa County.

Authorities said a 30-year-old man was operating heavy equipment when he was hit by an apparent “mudslide” while working in the bottom of a sand pit about 80 to 90 feet deep. The mudslide turned his equipment over and filled the cab with sand and mud.

EMS arrived and found the man with no obvious signs of life. He was declared dead. The victim has not been identified.

Atascosa County EMS, Atascosa County Sheriff’s deputies, Atascosa County Emergency Management, Poteet Fire Department and other heavy equipment operators are on scene in an effort to recover the victim from the equipment he was operating.

Authorities believe the sand got wet from the recent weather and collapsed. Atascosa County Sheriff Jake Guerra described the scene as “an avalanche at a sand plant.”

No other information was provided.
