ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas — The body of the worker who was hit by an apparent “mudslide” in Atascosa County Thursday has been found and identified.
According to the chief deputy, the worker was Alan Herrarte. His body was found in the sand pit around 4:55 a.m. Friday morning.
Emergency crews responded to Signal Peak Silica of Atascosa around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning near Highway 16 in northern Atascosa County.
Authorities said Herrarte was operating heavy equipment when he was hit by an apparent “mudslide” while working in the bottom of a sand pit about 80 to 90 feet deep. The mudslide turned his equipment over and filled the cab with sand and mud.
Authorities believe the sand got wet from the recent weather and collapsed. Atascosa County Sheriff Jake Guerra described the scene as “an avalanche at a sand plant.”
