MCQUEENEY, Texas — A 42-year-old man is expected to recover after authorities say he was shot a dozen times during a domestic dispute Sunday night in McQueeney, prompting a brief shelter-in-place order and a manhunt for the suspect.
Deputies with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:20 p.m. to the 100 block of McQueeney Road near Seguin Road after reports of gunfire.
Neighbors described hearing a rapid burst of shots before screams rang out.
“You just heard a whole bunch of ‘pap, pap, pap,’ and then people running outside, and there’s a guy sitting there on the ground covered in blood,” said one neighbor, who declined to be identified.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies arrived within minutes and found Michael Chavez lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. After an initial search failed to locate the shooter, deputies rendered first aid and called emergency medical services.
Chavez was transported to a hospital, where officials determined he had been shot 12 times. He underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition but is expected to recover.
With the suspect at large, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the area.
“We didn’t know what his intentions were at the time,” Lt. Zackary McBride with the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office said. “He had just shot an individual and fled the scene. We didn’t know if it was random or targeted.”
Investigators later determined the victim was the boyfriend of the suspect’s mother.
Authorities said the investigation has not revealed a motive. Chavez told investigators he was sitting in his car when the suspect approached and opened fire. Officials said there was no altercation beforehand.
Through tips received on social media, deputies located and arrested 21-year-old Camrine Chissell around noon Monday along the Guadalupe River between Hotshot Lane and FM 725.
Chissell was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
Lt. McBride says Chissell will see a judge in the morning to assess a bond amount.
