‘You save a life’ | More than 200 people donate at annual Spurs Blood Drive

Donors came to Frost Bank Center to give blood and receive tickets to a future Spurs game.

SAN ANTONIO — Spurs fans are getting a chance to cheer on the team by giving blood at a time of need.

More than 200 people will receive tickets to attend the San Antonio Spurs game against the Washington Wizards this Saturday by taking advantage of a semi-annual promotion the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center puts on with Spurs Sports and Entertainment.

“We’d love to see a five- or six-day supply. We’re at a two-and-a-half day supply,” said Francine Pena, senior manager of marketing and community engagement for South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. “That’s an adequate supply to provide the blood needed for patients for our community. However, when we have a decrease in the donor turnout like we did with the cold front, that means we don’t have the extra supply needed to be able to rebound.”

Dianna Acosta donated her blood for the first time at the Frost Bank Center.

“You save a life, and get to be rewarded. It’s not too bad,” she said.

For Karina Valladares, while it wasn’t her first time donating blood, it will be her first time attending a game this season.

“This actually popped up on Instagram and that’s when I saw it, so I was like ‘Let me go,'” she said. “I know people need blood sometimes, you just never know, so I want to help out.”

The community is encouraged to start donating blood and consider becoming frequent blood donors by donating four times a year. Appointments can be made by visiting SouthTexasBlood.org/FrostBank or calling (210) 731-5590
