HUNT, Texas — We’re hearing more about those terrifying moments when flood waters rushed in from those who managed to survive.
One man in Hunt, stood on a thin, electrical box for hours as the Guadalupe River rose up around him on Friday morning.
Christian Fell stood balancing on his toes for three long hours. He’s six feet tall and said at the peak, the water came up to his knees.
“I start to get up, and as I swing my feet over the side of the bed, I realized I was standing in water,” said Fell.
With water rushing in from the Guadalupe River, he found himself scrambling to survive.
“I was trying to climb onto that piece of furniture, but I couldn’t climb onto it because it just kept tumbling and rotating under the water, so I couldn’t make it on to the air mattress,” said Fell.” Then I realized the window was broken. So, I swam through the window, and I was standing on that meter box right there for the next three hours.”
Balancing on his tiptoes, he was alone, with his family staying at another spot down the road.
“I was standing on the top of it,” said Fell. ”I was holding onto the breaker box with my arm inside one of the slats in the roof for a couple hours… like three hours.”
Help was just a short distance away where he could see flashing police lights.
“I noticed I could finally climb down whenever there was a police officer walking through the street right here with this flashlight,” said Fell. “So, I just hop down and that was that was the end of it.”
Christian was able to reunite with his mom.
We asked his mother how she felt when she got the call that Christian was okay.
“There’s just no word,” said Christian’s mother.
And as for Christian?
“ I’m just happy to be here,” said Fell. “Yes. So I had to go home, go back to work, I guess. I don’t really know why.”
