San Antonio police are investigating a man’s claim of self-defense after he allegedly choked Rheanna Rae Saldaña Aquillon to death last month.
SAN ANTONIO — One month after the death of 43-year-old Rheanna Aguillon, her family is turning grief into advocacy, hoping her story raises awareness about domestic violence.
San Antonio police said Aguillon’s boyfriend admitted to choking her to death inside a northeast-side apartment on July 8.
According to investigators, he claims he acted in self-defense after Aguillon allegedly shot him in the foot during an argument.
Officers responded to a reported shooting at the Villas at Oakwell Farms apartment complex, where they found the boyfriend with a gunshot wound and Aguillon unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Bexar County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by strangulation.
The boyfriend told police that Aguillon accused him of cheating before allegedly grabbing his gun and firing multiple times. He claimed he choked her in an attempt to prevent further gunfire.
No arrests have been made but San Antonio police say the case remains an active investigation.
On Friday, Aguillon’s family held a memorial in her honor. Her sisters, Samantha Saldana and Justine Garcia, said they were moved by the outpouring of support.
“A lot of people came out to show their love and just to remember her, her memories and her laughter and the joy that she brought to our lives,” Garcia said.
The family used the memorial as an opportunity to speak out against domestic violence, urging others to seek help before it’s too late.
“We would have loved to help Rheanna get out of that situation,” Garcia said. “Instead of being in this situation.”
Aguillon’s stepdaughter, Abigail, and Rheanna’s two sons, Nathaniel and Isaias, also shared heartfelt words about their mother.
“If you see something, say something,” Abigail said. “Domestic violence goes under the radar way too many times.”
“I’m very grateful for everyone coming to support our mother and I love what they’re trying to do,” said Isaias.
“It’s appreciated that people are by her side during this tough time to make sure it gets stopped and she gets the justice she deserves,” said Nathaniel.
As the investigation continues, Aguillon’s family remains hopeful that speaking out will help prevent future tragedies.
