Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward held a press conference today regarding the arrest of David Taije Castleberry, 25, and Clarissa Guillen, 21, for the murder of Lucio Carmona, 25, of San Antonio. The two were arrested by the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) within 48 hours of the murder and are currently in the Atascosa County Jail held on an $800,000 bond.
During the press conference, Sheriff Soward stated that the murder occurred in Pleasanton, most likely at the site Carmona was found North of Pleasanton at Haverlah and Tessman Road just out of the city limits.
He stated that the victim and the two arrested had recently become acquainted in San Antonio, according to their investigation.
The ACSO was called around 6:49 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, with a report that a body was found on the side of the road north of Pleasanton just out of the city limits.
Sheriff Soward stated that initially, they could not determine what type of wound killed Carmona although they thought it was a gunshot. The autopsy later confirmed that Carmona was killed by gunshot.
“We were able to wrap this investigation up within 48 hours,” stated Sheriff Soward. “That doesn’t happen often but it’s a good thing when it does.”
Soward said that fingerprints were obtained from the medical examiner early Wednesday morning. “My investigator sent that to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, and we got a match.” The victim was identified as Lucio Carmona, 25, San Antonio. The investigators then tracked down a residence and contacted family members. The investigators worked throughout the day and were able to ascertain whom the victim was last seen with on Tuesday evening in San Antonio, around 4:30 p.m.
On Thursday, Soward said four of his criminal investigators spent most of the day in San Antonio working on the case. Yesterday afternoon, the ACSO set up surveillance at a location off Old Highway 90 West in San Antonio. The two suspects who had been with the victim showed up driving a silver vehicle, which was reported stolen in Bexar County.
Castleberry and Guillen both had arrest warrants and were taken into custody. Castleberry had arrest warrants for parole violation and drug possession, and Guillen had warrants for possession of a stolen vehicle out of Louisiana.
The suspects were returned to the ACSO County Jail Thursday evening where investigators interviewed them. The ACSO investigators obtained confessions from the suspects regarding the death of Carmona. “Details are still not all completely in, but we believe the motive was a robbery and there is a possibility that the charges will be upgraded at a later date with Capital Murder,” Sheriff Soward said. “Both suspects have been charged with murder. Bonds have been set this morning at $800,000.”
