HOUSTON — Monday is a big day for all World Cup fans! It will be officially one month until the world’s largest sporting tournament begins.
There will be thousands of fans, grass is being installed in the temporarily named Houston Stadium, but also some major upgrades downtown.
You will also see the flags for each country playing a game in Space City and crews re-paving 120 blocks downtown.
Kris Larson with Downtown Houston spoke with us about the upgrades.
“It’s about, you know, setting deadlines, understanding the milestones, really focusing ourselves to think creatively, but also leaving the door open for alternative solutions, things that are going to differentiate Houston from other host cities that are really going to showcase how proud we are to welcome the world,” Larson said.
Main Street has also undergone changes with expanded sidewalks for more walking access and to connect businesses to the rail stations.
“We’ve had a couple of years in preparation for this. Um, and we’ve been able to establish milestones, um, and ensure that we’re hitting all of those marks because there’s lots of different hurdles that you have to jump through to get something like a Main Street promenade done,” Larson said.
One of the other milestones was to make a business readiness playbook. It essentially breaks down answers to any questions businesses may have. It will answer everything from hosting watch parties to how often METRO trains will run.
