SAN ANTONIO — The recent rainfall has caused the drought index to lower in certain parts of Bexar County, prompting a lift in the recent burn ban.
Bexar County officials announced that the burn ban for unincorporated areas of the county have been lifted, effective immediately. This decision comes after the Keetch‑Byram Drought Index (KBDI), which measure wildfire risks, has dropped below 300 following multiple days of widespread rain.
“The recent rain has made significant impact to lower fire danger conditions for us to safely lift the burn ban,” Bexar County Fire Marshal Chris Lopez said in the announcement. “We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation throughout the ban and we urge unincorporated residents planning to burn in their property to take necessary precautions.”
Residents are advised to adhere to the following guidelines and safety tips:
- Check weather conditions before burning. Avoid burning on windy or dry days.
- Never leave a fire unattended. Stay with your burn at all times until it is completely extinguished.
- Keep fire‑suppression tools nearby, such as a garden hose, buckets of water, or a fire extinguisher.
- Clear the area around your burn, removing dry vegetation, debris, or anything that may easily catch fire.
- Ensure the fire is fully out by dousing and stirring ashes until they are cool to the touch.
- Call 9-1-1 immediately if a fire begins to spread or becomes unmanageable.
