Hearing Jerry Jones say, “President Clinton is coming through the door,” was probably not on your pre-draft Bingo card. But that’s exactly what happened on Wednesday
DALLAS — You never know what’s going to happen at a Jerry Jones press conference, and he has the presidents to prove it.
Right after the Dallas Cowboys’ pre-draft press conference began, Jerry Jones interrupted a question from the Dallas Morning News and looked dreamily off into the distance before announcing, “President Clinton is coming through the door right here, he’s coming up here to say hello to us.”
“Uh,” the Dallas Morning News reporter said before Jones urged him to continue asking his question.
Sure enough, WFAA’s camera panned to see Bill Clinton making his way inside the press room. The Morning News reporter got his question out, but didn’t get a full answer from Jerry before Clinton walked through the door.
When Clinton arrived, Jones made his way over to the former president, hindered by a slight stumble, caused by excitement, of course, he said.
“He’s been a wonderful, not only President, but friend over the years, and I’m really happy to have you here today,” Jones said.
Jones then went on to praise the press corps that assembled for the news conference. He pointed out the size of the group to Clinton, who is no stranger to large press events, saying it will unquestionably be the largest press conference in the NFL on Wednesday.
Jones reminisced on his post-Super Bowl visits to the White House in 1993 and 1994. Apparently, when Jones went to greet him, Clinton had the entire roster for the national-championship-winning Arkansas Razorbacks memorized and recited it to Jones unprepared.
The stroll down memory lane also included Jones’ career as a 185-pound guard.
“It’s a different world,” Clinton said. If Jones tried to take the field in today’s college games, he’d be the “late Jerry Jones,” Clinton joked.
The appearance served as an unintentional reminder that seven presidential terms have passed since the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl, a streak Jones undoubtedly hopes to break with this upcoming draft class and ensuing free agency period.
Lucky for the Cowboys, Clinton quipped, he’s “interested in negotiating a draft” maybe bringing some 90s nostalgia victories to the 2026 team.
