Bodies of two children found in burning car on the west side; Mother facing capital murder charges, SAPD says

Police say a 34-year-old woman taken for questioning after discovering the bodies of two children in a burning car on the west side.

SAN ANTONIO — Police say the bodies of two children were found in a burning car on the northwest side early Friday. 

First responders were called out to the area of 500 Richland Hills, near Loop 410 and Highway 151, sometime between 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. 

SAPD Assistant Chief Jesse Salame said the bodies of two children were confirmed to be found in the vehicle. He initially said the two children were “school aged,” but later gave an update that they are believed to be ages 5 and 7. 

Police said a 34-year-old woman was on the scene when they got there and officers discovered she was connected to the vehicle and took her in for questioning. She was later identified as Marlene Vidal. She is now facing charges of capital murder in the deaths of the children. 

Editor’s Note: Preliminary information from police indicated a possible third body found in the car, but police later clarified that it was the bodies of two children.
