The defendant’s lead attorney was talking and conscious when being taken out of the courtroom due to low blood sugar levels.
SAN ANTONIO — Day four of the Jose Ruiz trial ended earlier than expected after the defendant’s lead attorney experienced a health scare in the courtroom.
Defense attorney Theresa Connolly told Judge Stephanie Boyd she needed a break because her blood sugar levels were low.
Law enforcement personnel, state attorneys and others began offering Connolly food. Emergency medical crews wheeled Connolly out of the courtroom on a gurney. Connolly was talking and conscious as EMS cared for her.
Court resumed with defense attorney Loraine Efron resuming questioning of the state’s final witness.
Dr. Kimberly Molina, Bexar County chief medical examiner, described the visible injuries endured by 5-year-old Mercedes Losoya.
“Contusions, which are bruises, abrasions, which are scratches, and a laceration, which is a skin tear, specifically the laceration was at the back of the head. The contusions and the abrasions were scattered to the entirety of the body. Most averaging around the size of an inch but ranging up to about four inches,” Molina said.
The county’s lead medical examiner said Losoya possessed a healing injury on the inside of her lower lip where teeth were what she called traumatically absent.
She also noted Losoya had signs of kidney failure.
Ruiz faces life in prison if convicted of injury to a child, seriously bodily injury. Mendoza, who testified against her ex-boyfriend on Thursday, accepted a plea deal in August, capping her prison sentence to 45 years.
The trial is expected to resume on Monday.
