A man fleeing from deputies was killed in a crash early Thursday on the far West Side, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, a deputy conducted a traffic stop just before 1 a.m. on a vehicle that was driving nearly 30 mph over the speed limit on U.S. 90 near Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. When the deputy approached the vehicle, he could see what appeared to be packaged bags of Xanax on the passenger seat, Salazar said.
Salazar said the driver willingly handed the drugs to the deputy and indicated that he was carrying a handgun. The deputy then asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, but he refused and sped away.

By the time the deputy made it back to his patrol unit, he had lost sight of the vehicle, but started driving in the direction the suspect fled, the sheriff said. When the deputy approached the 7000 block of W. Military Drive, he saw sparks coming from what appeared to be a crash.
The vehicle had hit a utility pole before rolling into a nearby parking lot and hitting a parked U-Haul truck. The man was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We don’t know how fast he was going, but based on the damage to the utility pole, he was going fast,” Salazar said. “He actually sheered off about 12 feet of the pole.”
Salazar said deputies found “felony amounts” of drugs that were packaged for sale, drug paraphernalia and at least one handgun in the vehicle.
Officials have not identified the man.
