Former Spur Horry says San Antonio needs a point guard now and it doesn’t have to be a veteran player

“That’s what you definitely need on that team,” said Horry.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs are rebuilding, and one of the spots on the floor that needs to be addressed is the point guard.

And former team forward Robert Horry agrees.

Speaking with San Antonio Sports Stars’ “The Blitz,” Horry emphatically said the Spurs need a point guard, and it does not have to be a veteran player.

“I think first of all, if I’m coaching the San Antonio Spurs, I got to get me a guard,” he said. “I got to get me a guard that knows how to get the ball to Victor (Wembanyama). Not take shots because they think I’m the guy of the team. You know your pecking order.”

“That’s what you definitely need on that team.”

The Spurs have been rumored to be linked to Trae Young, Dejounte Murray, and Darius Garland to address the team’s need for a veteran upgrade at the point guard spot.

However, Horry believes a veteran is unnecessary because the team has coach Gregg Popovich.

“Everyone says you need a veteran leader on the team. No, you don’t,” he said. “If you got a coach that knows how to manage like Pop does manage the situation. You can do that. Sometimes veterans get in the way because they’re old and slow.”

The Spurs do have options to address the point guard spot this offseason.

They can trade for top point guards in the 2024 NBA Draft, such as Rob Dillingham, or use the mountain of assets to trade or sign a veteran point guard.

Or they can look in their backyard and continue to let Tre Jones run the point. Last season, he did a solid job at the point guard spot, bringing a steady hand to the court. He is a veteran player, and his teammates appreciated his efforts.

“Tre brings a different energy. When we’re in transition he’s always looking up and just trying to find others,” Devin Vassell said. “He knows when and where to find and is just a true point guard.”
