‘I found a home here’ | Spurs’ Wembanyama thanks fans, teammates, San Antonio after winning Rookie of the Year

“I would’ve never been able to do this alone,” posted Wembanyama about his Rookie of the Year Award.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs‘ Victor Wembanyama ran away with the 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year Award but thanked everyone who helped him reach the incredible milestone.

In a touching message he posted on social media, Wemby expressed his gratitude to Silver and Black fans, the city of San Antonio, his teammates, and all who surround him to help him excel on and off the court.

“I would’ve never been able to do this alone. This one is for my teammates, for the entire staff from trainers to coaches, from the chef at the cafeteria to the ushers at the arena every night, for the Spurs organization, for the best fans in the world having our back winning or losing. And last but not least for the city of San Antonio, I found a home here. Thank you all,” he posted.

Wemby was undoubtedly winning the award once the regular season closed. He finished with 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and an NBA-best 3.6 blocked shots per game.

“I’ve just witnessed so much greatness. And I want to be a part of it,” Wembanyama said. “More and more, I’m seeing that I’m already able to compete with those guys. I’m not near, but I’m on the right path. I know it. And I’m going to get there one day soon.”

He took home three straight Rookie of the Month Awards to close the season and shattered records in his rookie campaign.

However, he understands that the personal accolades are still more about the team than him.

“Of course, these [awards] are going to come when we become the team we’re going to become,” he said.

Wembanyama’s NBA career is just beginning, and if his rookie season is any indication, his award shelf will likely become an award warehouse.

“These are going to be on my way,” he said. “It’s another milestone, and these things are important to me.”
