Major San Antonio crash on I-35 shuts down lanes, causes hour-long delay

A major wreck along I-35 on the far Northeast Side of San Antonio is causing significant delays in an already congested section of city highway. The wreck was reported before 7 a.m. Monday morning, April 22, and traffic continues to build up in the area.

A major wreck was reported in the northbound lanes of I-35 near Olympia Parkway around 6:50 a.m. Monday morning. While the severity of the crash remains unknown, two firetrucks and several first responders could be seen shutting down lanes of traffic to respond to the crash.

This section of I-35 is nearly always stop and go during morning and evening rush hours, but traffic monitoring sites like SigAlert are warning this wreck could cause up to an hour-long delay for morning commuters. So, it may be best to avoid the area if possible or plan on being a bit late to the office or to drop the kids off this morning.

Traffic cameras from the Texas Department of Transportation show traffic congestion from Schertz Parkway, on the Far Northeast Side, all the way down to Wazlem Road near East Terrell Hills. According to the Texas Department of Transportation incident map, the wreck may be cleared soon after 7:45 a.m., but the traffic created by the crash seemingly remains.

It’s unknown if there were any injuries or major damage as a result of the crash, but the emergency response and traffic caused indicates it may have been a severe crash.
