SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County Jail sergeant facing stage 5 kidney failure is preparing for a life-changing kidney transplant thanks to an extraordinary gift from a longtime friend and coworker.
In February, Joseph Vela received devastating news. Doctors told him his kidneys were functioning at just 10 percent, leaving him in need of a transplant.
“It’s just been this weight on my chest, like this cloud that’s weighed over me,” Vela said.
That cloud followed him through every aspect of his life. The husband, father and Bexar County Jail sergeant found himself trading his badge and uniform for dialysis cords as he navigated a battle unlike any he had faced on the job.
“The port that I have, I can’t go swimming, and it’s summertime and we go to the lake a lot, Schlitterbahn, Fiesta Texas,” Vela said. “And because it’s exposed, I can’t let it get wet and get infected.”
After learning his kidneys were failing, Vela began searching for a donor. But the person who would ultimately change his life was much closer than he expected.
“The day that he was diagnosed with stage 5 kidney failure, we were on the phone and we were talking about it and I just said, ‘Hey, where do I sign up,’” said José Calderón.
Deputy Calderón, who works in the Bexar County Traffic Unit, has been friends with Vela for 15 years. Their friendship and brotherhood led Calderón to make a decision few people ever face — becoming a living kidney donor.
“I didn’t hesitate because I know he would do the same for me,” Calderón said.
Recently, Vela received more encouraging news from his nurse coordinator.
“She said we have a tentative date for July 1,” Vela said. “We’ve had countless visits and tests done.”
The upcoming transplant represents more than a medical procedure. For both men, it is a testament to friendship, loyalty and sacrifice.
Support for Vela’s journey has also come from the community he has served for years. Donations through a GoFundMe campaign are helping ease the financial burden as he prepares for surgery and recovery.
“I’m excited to be able to have my friend here back at 100%,” Calderón said. “We’re both girl dads. And we’ll grow old together and raise our daughters together and life will continue to be great.”
As one man prepares to receive a new kidney, another prepares to give one — proving that heroes don’t always wear uniforms. Sometimes, they stand beside us as friends.
