Man detained after allegedly assaulting wife, locking himself in room with 5-year-old in west Bexar County

Authorities were on scene for about two and a half hours Monday before the man emerged.

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County authorities responded to a standoff situation in a far-west-side neighborhood where a young man assaulted his wife before briefly locking himself into an upstairs bedroom with a firearm and his 5-year-old child, officials said He emerged and was detained shortly after 2 p.m.

The woman was treated for minor injuries after escaping the home with her 6-month-old baby, whom she was downstairs with when the man locked himself in at a home in the 3000 block of Saylers Creek. Johnny Garcia, a spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), said the man “never made any acts of aggression, never made any threats.”

“There was a weapon inside the room where the suspect and child were, so we had to take every precaution we could to ensure their safety,” Garcia said. “Fortunately our guys do a great job deescalating situations. That’s exactly what happened here: a peaceful resolution.”

The as-yet-unidentified man, estimated to be in this mid-20s, is expected to be facing charges of assault and interfering with a 911 call.

The woman initially called law enforcement around 11:30 a.m. and contacted deputies upon their arrival, Garcia said. SWAT negotiators were on scene and helped communicate with the man through the door of the room he was locked in.

He eventually came out.

“There’s some back-and forth information on who started what,” Garcia said. “At the end of the day we just know there was a domestic violence incident that occurred here with a female victim being injured.”
