Man dies in crash fleeing Bexar County sheriff’s deputies – Laredo Morning Times

A man is dead after crashing his vehicle into a U-Haul truck and flipping the car onto its side while reportedly trying to evade arrest with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, January 12. The crash happened on Military Drive West and Woodgate Drive, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said in a press briefing.

The pursuit occurred just before 1 a.m. after a traffic safety unit pulled over a vehicle driving over 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. Salazar said the deputy saw narcotics in plain view when he approached the passenger side. Deputies said that the driver said the narcotics were prescription drugs. He also told deputies that he had a gun.

Salazar said that deputies asked the man to step outside of the vehicle, to which he said, “no,” and drove away at a high rate of speed. Deputies followed the man for several blocks before the driver lost control and crashed into a pole, then a U-Haul truck and flipped his vehicle onto its side, Salazar said.

Officials said the crash caused the driver to be ejected from the vehicle about a mile away from the incident. He was pronounced dead on arrival. Salazar said they believe the man was in his late 20s or early 30s.

Salazar said deputies found what looked like Xanax inside the man’s vehicle. Salazar said it looked like it had been packaged for sale. Deputies said they also found a pound of what appeared to be marijuana inside the car.
