A Del Rio officer is recovering after being shot during a call last weekend, with his wallet likely preventing more severe injuries, according to police.
DEL RIO, Texas — Del Rio police say an officer’s wallet may have prevented more serious injuries after he was shot while responding to a call last weekend.
According to the Del Rio Police Department, officers were dispatched just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday to a vehicle alarm at a home on East 10th Street. When they arrived, officers found the front door open and received no response from inside, prompting them to enter the home to check on the residents.
Police say the officers were confronted by a gunman, identified as 37-year-old Eric Castillo, who allegedly fired multiple rounds, striking Officer Alexis Ramos.
Officers returned fire, and police say Castillo then barricaded himself inside the home before eventually surrendering.
According to Del Rio police, Ramos was shot in the leg. Investigators say the bullet struck his wallet, which they believe prevented more severe injuries. Ramos is recovering at home.
Castillo has been charged with three counts of deadly conduct, discharge of a Firearm, one count of aggravated Assault on a public servant, and one count of attempted capital murder of a peace officer.
