Police initially said the attack stemmed from a lover’s quarrel, but family members are pushing back against that narrative.
SAN ANTONIO — A man was brutally attacked with a machete on the west side after San Antonio police said that the suspect found him with his wife. But family members now tell KENS 5 the attack was rooted in a misunderstanding, saying the situation wasn’t a lover’s quarrel.
The victim’s hand was nearly severed in the incident, which happened in the 1800 block of Mossy Creek around 11 p.m. Monday. Police found the 31-year-old victim upon arriving, saying at the scene that the woman’s husband — Luis Dalberto Romero-Flores, the suspect in the attack — believed she had been cheating on him with the victim when he showed up.
Nathan Perea told KENS 5 that isn’t the case. He arrived at the home Monday night when he saw several police cruisers outside, saying it was his friend whose hand was nearly cut off in the assault.
“It was just a big misunderstanding, and they tried to stop the situation from happening,” Perea said. “It wasn’t a lover’s quarrel. It had nothing to do with them sexually.”
Romero-Flores faces charges of aggravated assault in the case. Perea said the suspect is his brother-in-law.
“That’s what kind of shocked everybody, because he’s never done anything like this,” Perea said. “For him to react that way with anything, that’s what kind of spooked my nieces and my sister.”
