Man sentenced to 35 years after admitting guilt in death of 10-year-old

The man told police that he blacked out and when he came to, he found the 10-year-old dead and didn’t know what had happened.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Paul Bateman will spend the next 35 years in prison after he admitted to a judge that he was responsible for the death of a 10-year-old.

In August 2018, the 10-year-old’s parents left her and her one-year-old sister in Bateman’s care. The one-year-old was unharmed but Bateman told police that he blacked out and when he came to, he found the 10-year-old dead and didn’t know what had happened.

The child reportedly died due to blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

Bateman will also concurrently serve five years for an assault of a public servant charge that stems from the same incident after he also admitted to assaulting a public servant.

“The circumstances of this case were tragic. Our prayers and our hearts are with the victim’s family,” said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales, “May they now have some sense of closure, and may their child rest in peace.”
