SAN ANTONIO — With an upcoming runoff election just days away, San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is calling on federal officials to avoid immigration enforcement activity near polling locations.
The mayor said she sent a letter Friday to the Department of Homeland Security, urging the agency to ensure that enforcement operations do not “inadvertently deter or dissuade” lawful U.S. voters from casting their ballots due to fear.
The request follows reports of federal immigration enforcement activity earlier this week at a San Antonio public library that was also serving as an early voting site.
The incident raised concerns among local leaders about the potential impact such activity could have on voter turnout.
In her letter, Jones expressed a desire to maintain open communication with federal agencies, emphasizing the need to balance public safety with transparency during the election period.
As of now, there has been no response from DHS regarding the mayor’s request.
