Passion of Christ re-enactment to start at new location this year

Each year, thousands of people begin their Good Friday with a San Antonio tradition.

SAN ANTONIO — The Passion of Christ re-enactment is a beloved tradition here in San Antonio and this year, it will begin at a new location from years past.

This year’s re-enactment procession will start at Travis Park at 9:30 a.m. with a ecumenical prayer service. That will be followed by a depiction of Jesus’ crucifixion in front of the Cathedral at noon and a traditional Hispanic Good Friday service at 1 p.m. with Archbishop Gustavo.

A celebration of the Lord’s passion, which is a service of prayer, Holy communion and veneration of the Cross will take place at 3 p.m. With reconciliation, or confessions, taking place in the Main Plaza at 4 p.m.

Later that night, the procession will close with the vigil of the sorrowful mother at 7 p.m. The service symbolizes a funeral vigil that will begin with an outdoor procession around Main Plaza followed by extending condolences to the Virgin Mary.
