Pippa has waited more than a year for someone to choose her | Forgotten Friends

The sweet terrier mix with the charming underbite is healthy, loving and available with no adoption fee.

SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

There are dogs who demand attention the second they walk into a room.

And then there’s Pippa.

She’s the kind of dog who waits quietly, watches carefully and slowly decides if you’re one of the good ones.

Once you are? You’ve got a best friend for life.

Pippa is a 5-year-old terrier mix who has spent more than a year waiting at the shelter after Windcrest police found her running in the street while chasing a vehicle. She had no tags, no collar, no microchip—and heartbreakingly, no one ever came looking for her.

Since arriving on Feb. 25, 2025, Pippa has been hoping her next chapter would be the one where someone finally stays.

She’s healthy, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She also comes with one unforgettable feature: a tiny underbite and one lower canine tooth that peeks out like a permanent smile.

Pippa can be shy with new people, the kind of girl who prefers a proper introduction instead of strangers rushing in for pets. But once she trusts you, she melts.

She loves affection from her people. She takes treats gently—especially bacon strips, thank you very much—and lights up when it’s time to play.

Fetch? Yes.

Tossing toys into the air and entertaining herself? Also yes.

Walking by your side like she’s been there forever? Absolutely.

She gets along with most dogs and tends to politely excuse herself when she’s had enough socializing. Honestly, relatable.

Pippa would likely do best in a calmer home with adults or older children who understand that trust takes time. Crowded, chaotic spaces aren’t really her style.

What she needs now is simple: patience, kindness and someone who sees the beauty in a dog who blooms slowly.

Because the quiet ones often love the deepest.

And right now, Pippa’s adoption fee is free.

All she needs is someone to say yes.

Pippa is healthy, spayed, vaccinated, and waiting for you at Windcrest Animal Care & Control. Visit them at 8601 Midcrown Drive, in Windcrest, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

There is no fee to adopt Pippa from the shelter, leaving you more money to spend on treats and toys.

For whoever adopts Pippa, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

For more information on adopting pets, please visit their website, or email them at Mcarrillo@windcrest-tx.gov.

If you’d like to donate to the shelter, they need leashes, collars and gently used blankets. You can drop them off at the shelter. The shelter says they would welcome more volunteers if you have the time, and would like to help care for the animals.

You can follow Windcrest Animal Control on Facebook.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
