Police: San Antonio firefighter hospitalized after welfare check, sparking law enforcement standoff

The barricade situation on the northwest side has been ongoing since around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio law enforcement are working an hourslong standoff on the northwest side that began when a firefighter was cut and subsequently hospitalized as a precaution.

The firefighter was responding to a call for a welfare check shortly before 10 a.m. in the area of North Loop 1604 and La Cantera Parkway when he was “cut by the suspect,” according to an SAPD preliminary report. The firefighter’s injuries weren’t considered to be life-threatening and were categorized as minor.

“The suspect went into a separate room and has since barricaded themselves,” police said.

As of 1:45 p.m., the scene was still ongoing. Authorities have not identified the suspect or the firefighter. SAFD officials said they were cut on the hand.

It’s also unclear what building the barricade situation is focused on.

This is a developing story.
