Police union prepares to elect new vice president as contract talks stall

The leadership transition comes as negotiations with the city remain paused.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police Officers Association is preparing for another major leadership change as members vote Tuesday to select a new vice president while contract negotiations with the city remain at a standstill.

The election comes just weeks after longtime union president Danny Diaz announced his retirement from the department and stepped down from his leadership role with the union.

Under SAPOA bylaws, former Vice President Johnny Perez moved into the president’s position following Diaz’s departure.

Now, union members are expected to choose who will fill the vacant vice president role — a position that could help shape the future of ongoing labor negotiations with the city.

Contract talks between SAPOA and the City of San Antonio were paused after union leaders criticized the city’s latest proposal, calling it a “slap in the face.”

Despite the tension, both sides have reportedly reached agreements on seven of the 16 negotiation points currently being discussed.

City Manager Erik Walsh has expressed confidence the city and union can still reach a deal, emphasizing the importance of finalizing an agreement before planning begins for the 2027 budget.

The budget process is expected to ramp up in the coming months.
