After years of training, assistance dogs are finally being paired with the veterans they’ll support every day.
SAN ANTONIO — There will be wagging tails, emotional hugs and life-changing new beginnings in San Antonio this week as veterans meet the service dogs trained to help them heal.
Paws for Purple Hearts hosted an Assistance Dog Graduation Ceremony on May 9 at the UTSA Retama Auditorium, pairing veterans with their new service dogs after years of training.
The dogs have spent two to three years preparing for the moment — learning skills designed to assist veterans living with PTSD, mobility challenges and other service-related conditions.
For many veterans, the journey has been personal from the start.
Organizers say several participants helped train the dogs themselves as part of their own recovery process, making the final pairing especially emotional.
The graduation ceremony marks the beginning of a new partnership built on trust, healing and companionship.
Program leaders say the dogs provide more than assistance with daily tasks. They also help veterans regain confidence, independence and emotional stability.
The event featured powerful moments as veterans met the dogs they’ll now rely on every day.
