The most recent arrest comes just a week after the first suspect was charged with capital murder.
SAN ANTONIO — Loved ones of 19-year-old Devin Farias are hopeful justice is on the horizon as yet another suspect has been arrested and charged in the robbery-turned murder.
Authorities say 19-year-old Amariae Washington is now facing a capital murder charge in the shooting death, which happened in the early morning hours of March 11 at an apartment complex along the 7600 block of U.S. Highway 90 West.
Authorities say Washington was one of three suspects who showed up to the apartment complex to buy a gun from Farias. Arresting documents indicate the suspects brought guns of their own.
A family member who was present told authorities one suspect began assaulting Farias and taking items, while the other two held her and her baby at gunpoint. Farias’ girlfriend was also inside the apartment at the time, according to family.
Police say the suspects then shot Farias before fleeing the scene.
Farias’ cousin, Lenice Bains, says the latest arrest brings some relief to the grieving family.
“I cannot believe that the youth of today feel like they need to resort to murdering people to get the things that they need and want out of life,” Bains said. “That’s what’s really sad to me.”
Bains added that knowing Washington has been charged offers a sense of peace.
“That is the one that we believe was holding the gun to the baby’s head and the other family member’s head,” Bains said. “So, knowing that he specifically has been charged, I can sleep a lot better.”
Bains emphasized that the violence could have been avoided.
“They could have robbed him and left him there, beat him up maybe or whatever, but they didn’t have to kill him,” Bains said.
Over the past month, Bains has also been supporting the family member who witnessed Farias’ final moments.
Last week, police arrested 18-year-old Davonta Jones in connection to the case. Investigators say they were led to Washington through an anonymous tip claiming he had admitted to taking part in the robbery and shooting.
Authorities are actively searching for a third suspect believed to be the shooter in addition to the possible getaway driver.
“We already have two capital murder charges,” Bains said. “I hope that they come forward.”
