A man who was shot by the San Antonio police during an incident at a Westside motel has died, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Jose Luis Iruegas, 45, was shot after allegedly threatening an officer with a gun at the Luxury Inn motel on January 4.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said in a news briefing at the time that SAPD received a call about a man threatening people with a gun in the parking lot of the hotel off Culebra Road, near Woodlawn Lake Park and Interstate 10.
McManus said that police found nobody with a gun in the parking lot and no complainant to talk to when they responded to the hotel. About two hours later, McManus said officers received another call about a man with a gun in the parking lot. The caller said the man was arguing with a guy and waving his gun around.
When police arrived the second time, McManus said the man, later identified as Iruegas, had already walked back to his hotel room. One of the officers walked up to the hotel room while the other remained in the parking lot, McManus said. When the officer knocked on the door, McManus said the first thing that came out of the door was a gun.
That’s when, McManus said, the officer opened fire. SAPD struck Iruegas multiple times in the torso. Iruegas was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
On Monday, January 30, the BCSO sent out an alert saying that the family had decided to make the decision to remove Iruegas from life support. He was pronounced dead on Sunday, January 29.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit, Criminal Investigations Division, and the Precinct 2 Constables Office are conducting an investigation into this death.
