SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man has pleaded guilty to federal charges tied to a series of ATM explosions last year.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, 44-year-old Dustin Jay Ammons admitted to attempting to destroy ATMs at two local banks in September 2025.
Investigators say surveillance video showed Ammons arriving in a pickup truck, placing pipe bombs at the machines and triggering explosions that failed to break into the ATMs.
Authorities later executed a search warrant at his home in December, where agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives discovered a homemade explosives lab containing PETN, along with multiple firearms, ammunition and another pipe bomb inside a vehicle.
Officials say Ammons, a convicted felon, was not legally allowed to possess firearms or explosive materials and had no required licenses or registrations.
He pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count related to transporting explosive materials without a license.
Ammons faces up to 15 years in prison on the firearm charge and up to 10 years for the explosives charge. A federal judge will determine his sentence at a later date.
The case was investigated by the ATF, Federal Bureau of Investigation and San Antonio Police Department, with assistance from local fire and arson officials.
