The president of a San Antonio oil company was among two men killed on Tuesday when his vehicle collided with a gravel truck on the Loop 1604  frontage road on the Northwest Side on Tuesday. John Hayes, 63, was the president of the oil and gas company Activa Resources LLC, according to the Express-News.

Hayes was killed along with the driver of the gravel truck, Delgado Garcia, 25, who was ejected from his truck after running a red light at the intersection with the Interstate 10 access road and colliding with Hayes vehicle. The car Hayes was driving was sent careening into a pillar when it was hit. Garcia died at University Hospital, but Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hayes had more than 30 years in the oil and gas industry, including serving for two related companies called Activa and Tiva Resources. He was president when both companies declared bankruptcy that Hayes pinned on “a dramatic drop in crude oil pricing during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Express-News reports.

Activa launched in 2003 and Tiva launched in 2018. Hayes also served on the boards of Santikos Enterprises and the San Antonio Area Foundation, which is a philanthropic nonprofit that provides scholarships and grants to area organizations. The Area Foundation also manages and provides grants from the business assets of the late John L. Santikos.
