Police a 31-year-old male victim sustained a gunshot wound to his upper left arm when another man dropped his backpack that reportedly had a gun inside.
SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police said a man was shot after a gun inside of a backpack went off at an east-side Stop and Shop store.
Police said officers responded to a shooting in progress on the 800 block of North New Braunfels Avenue on Sunday afternoon.
An SAPD spokesperson said the 31-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound to his upper left arm when another man dropped his backpack that reportedly had a gun inside. The gun then went off, striking the victim and injuring him.
The suspect then took off running but officers did detain a man shortly after who matched the description of the suspect.
Police say this is an ongoing investigation and it is unknown at this time whether the victim and suspect knew each other. Investigators are also trying to determine whether or not this was an accidental shooting since the suspect fled the scene.
The victim was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) in stable condition.
