SAPD: Teen detained after attempted traffic stop downtown leads to police chase, officer injured

Police said a 16-year-old was detained after a brief pursuit led to a crash and a bike officer’s injury in downtown San Antonio on Friday night.

SAN ANTONIO — A teenage suspect was taken into custody Friday night after a traffic stop attempt led to a brief vehicle pursuit, a crash, and an officer injury, according to San Antonio Police Department officials.

SAPD said the incident happened around 9:39 p.m. near East Commerce and Navarro streets when bike patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations. Police say the driver fled the stop, causing one of the bicycle officers to fall while attempting to follow.

Other bike officers continued tracking the vehicle as it sped away, according to SAPD. The suspect then ran a red light at North Flores and Pecan streets and collided with a black Chevrolet Blazer and a gray Toyota.

Police said the crash disabled the suspect vehicle. The driver, a 16-year-old male, then fled on foot but was quickly detained nearby.

SAPD said the bike officer involved suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
