Two Gillespie County residents die from their injuries after May home explosion near Fredericksburg

The May 27 blast was suspected to have been caused by a propane leak, according to authorities, but the investigation is ongoing.

SAN ANTONIO — Two Gillespie County residents hospitalized after their home exploded in Gillespie County last month died just days apart from each other.

David Dean Tatsch and Loyce Tatsch were taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in the aftermath of the May 27 explosion in a rural area about nine miles south of Fredericksburg. The two-story home was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived; authorities have said a propane gas leak may have been behind the blast, which happened when one of the Tatsches tried using the stove.

Within minutes of a large boom that rattled nearby homes, black smoke began rising into the air.

David Tatsch died on May 30 from conflagration injuries related to the blast and destructive fire that ensued, according to the medical examiner’s office. Loyce Tatsch died of thermal and blunt force trauma.

The medical examiner listed the manner of death for both as accidental.

The Gillespie County Sheriff’s Office is continue to investigate the blast in order to determine an exact cause.
