Jovonie’s Hugs, a free baby pantry, alleviates financial strain by providing essentials to families across San Antonio.
SAN ANTONIO — Jovonie’s Hugs serves a desperate need in our community. Located in Dwight Middle School on the south side, from 9 a.m.-3p.m., the free baby pantry provides whatever a mom in help may need.
“My focus was to ease any financial strain on a family that’s raising children,” said Pam Allen, CEO of Eagles Flight Advocacy and Outreach. “So whatever we can do to help is that we’re going to do that.”
Jovonie’s Hugs is named in the memory of Jovonie Ochoa, a four-year old who was killed 22 years ago due to horrific child abuse.
Allen’s hope is that the resources they provide will prevent another tragedy.
“We serve babies, making sure that they have diapers, formula wipes and clothes and shoes and furniture,” Allen explained.
Six weeks ago, Allen noticed the need for the resources at Jovonie’s Hugs was increasing. That, combined with the influx they expect to see in the summer, prompted her to make a call for volunteers.
They already serve hundreds of families a month.
“This is the room that just has the highest volume of, clients who need help, and we’re so glad to offer it,” she stated. “But when we see that there’s people waiting in the hallway with children, we definitely want to make sure that we address their needs as quickly as possible.”
They need volunteers who are available Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, though they see the most need on Mondays and Tuesdays. Eagle’s Flight is flexible, so volunteers can decide how many hours they can contribute.
“This is a volunteer position that you will absolutely fall in love with,” Allen said. “Some of us even hold the babies while the mom shop. That’s the best part is being able to interact with the children while moms are shopping.”
