WATCH: SA fire crews rescue man stuck in deep mud

He was hospitalized and is expected to be OK.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio first responders rushed to rescue a man stuck in waist-deep mud, a dramatic operation caught on camera Thursday afternoon.

It happened on the northeast side, off Green Road near Interstate 10 and Loop 1604 in Converse. Crews arrived around 1:30 p.m. to find the man stuck in the pit of mud.

Officials with Bexar County Emergency Services District 10 said the man was dumping a vacuum truck into the pit when he slipped in the mud and fell five feet in. First responders were able to put him in a harness and, using one of their ladder trucks, pulled him to safety.

Battalion Chief Brad Chambers said the man’s coworkers immediately saw he was in danger and tried to get him out, possibly saving his life before fire crews arrived. He said the situation could’ve been worse.

“When you step in the mud or you get in the mud, it kind of sucks up against your body,” Chambers said. “And it definitely compresses your legs and/or anything that it’s covering. So that was definitely a huge concern that we had there.”

The victim, who is in his 40s, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be OK.
