‘We are going to continue this fight’ | Family honors slain Converse woman with Fiesta medal as case remains unresolved

“Just know that our family is deeply wounded right now. However, wearing this medal, buying this medal shows that they really support us and they’re behind us.”

CONVERSE, Texas — The family of a 22-year-old woman killed in a 2023 shooting is honoring her memory during Fiesta while continuing to call for justice in her unsolved case.

Khadija Derry was shot and killed in December 2023 while sitting in a car outside her home in Converse. Authorities have said she was struck by multiple bullets in what investigators described as an ambush attack. More than two years later, no one has been charged in her death.

Now, her family is turning to Fiesta – the San Antonio tradition known as a “party with a purpose” – to both remember Derry and raise awareness about gun violence.

Derry’s uncle, Keven Shandy, said the idea to create a “Justice for Khadija” Fiesta medal came to him late one night as a way to honor his niece, who loved attending Fiesta events.

“I said, ‘How about if we do a medal,’” Shandy recalled.

Proceeds from the medal will go toward Khadija’s foundation and efforts to promote gun violence awareness. Shandy said the initiative is also meant to encourage accountability.

“A lot of guns on the streets are really accessible,” he said. “We want to make sure we are doing our part to ensure that those who have access to these weapons are held accountable.”

Investigators previously said surveillance video showed two shooters ambushing Derry. In May 2025, Converse police announced that one suspect had been killed in April 2024. A second suspect, identified as a juvenile, was arrested but later released after the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office returned the case for further investigation.

Police have said interviews and digital evidence linked the surviving suspect to the killing, but prosecutors determined the evidence was not sufficient to pursue a murder charge.

“We still have not received any justice,” Shandy said. “We are going to continue this fight until we get that justice.”

Derry’s relatives said her death has taken a heavy emotional toll, but they have leaned on each other for support. They hope the medal will not only help fund their efforts but also keep her memory alive in the community.

The medals are scheduled to go on sale for $20, at an event Saturday, April 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at The SipIT, at 5308 Broadway in Alamo Heights.

“Whoever buys this medal, just know that our family is deeply wounded right now,” a relative said. “Wearing it shows that people support us and stand behind us.”

Khadija’s family says everyone is welcome to the event, and they are inviting the Fiesta medal community to come out, bring your medal’s to sell and swap as well.

We did reach out to Converse police, they said they are working on an update in the case and welcome any additional information from the public.
