The next course with the National EMS Academy starts June 1.
SAN ANTONIO — Right now the job market is a tough one for many, especially with AI infiltrating so many professions. But, the field of emergency medicine is in short supply and in need of EMTs in a big way, so if you’re looking for something new, training to become one may be a path where you may prosper.
Becoming an EMT is often looked at as a calling to be a stabilizing force during a person’s absolute worst day. If you’ve been considering a career like this, the next National EMS Academy course kicks off in just a few days and there is still time to enroll.
“It means everything, especially if it’s a loved one. It’s somebody’s son, daughter, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa and uncle,” said Blaine Leachman, a paramedic & South-Central Texas EMT of the Year.
He became a paramedic two years ago. He says couldn’t think of a more rewarding career than helping people when they need it most.
“That’s a family member to someone. I want them to make sure they get home safe. Get them to the hospital. Figure out what’s going on,” Leachman told us.
Analise Baker, a San Antonio National EMS Academy Instructor added, “I personally have been in emergency services since I graduated high school, and I’ve found it to be extremely rewarding personally for me.”
The next EMT course with the National EMS Academy kicks off this Monday, June 1, and there is still time to enroll.
If you don’t make that deadline, the next course begins on June 30, nd each course is 12 weeks or three months long.
The base cost of the program is just $1,200, with entry level salaries starting at $38,000, and no training is needed.
“They learn essentially all the hands on skills and how to be an EMT, from starting off at nothing to going to becoming a full fledged EMT ready and able to take the national registry exam,” Baker told us.
Leachman added, “If you want to go into the medical field it’s pretty much like a jack of all trades. You get to see a little bit of everything.”
