Some say celebrations after Spurs wins are becoming destructive and dangerous.
SAN ANTONIO — As fans prepare for Game 5 between the Spurs and Timberwolves, set to tip off at 7 p.m. Tuesday night, some business owners along Southwest Military Drive say they are worried about what could happen after the final buzzer.
Videos shared online after recent San Antonio Spurs victories have shown crowds gathering in the area for celebrations involving burnouts, fireworks and street takeovers.
While many fans see the gatherings as a show of team pride, some nearby business owners say the celebrations are becoming increasingly disruptive.
“I think it’s great that the city comes together and everybody’s happy,” said Betty Dovalina, owner of Betty’s Flower Shop. “The only thing I don’t like: the way they celebrate on Military Drive. It’s kind of getting out of hand, destructive and dangerous.”
Dovalina said videos circulating online showing chaotic crowds concern her, especially when celebrations lead to damage to local businesses.
“I’ve seen businesses spray-painted with ‘Go Spurs Go,’” she said. “That’s uncalled for because we have to pay for that to get it taken off.”
She also said the celebrations can make it difficult for drivers and nearby residents to safely navigate the area.
“It’s hard for other people who are not celebrating to get through here with their donuts and the fires they light in the street and fireworks,” Dovalina said. “I would like to see them celebrate responsibly.”
Ahead of Tuesday’s game, the San Antonio Police Department released a statement acknowledging the gatherings while reminding fans to follow the law:
“The San Antonio Police Department is aware of the celebrations being held by Spurs fans following victories. The Department supports lawful celebratory activity but must also reduce any public safety risks, especially when vehicles and pedestrians are occupying the same space.”
Police are also reminding fans to follow all traffic laws, city ordinances and Texas Penal Code regulations following Spurs games.
