Brandeis High School students win top honors in Congressional art competition

Two Northside ISD seniors will have their artwork displayed in Washington, D.C.

SAN ANTONIO — Two talented students from Northside Independent School District are making a name for themselves on a national stage.

Seniors at Brandeis High School took first and second place in the 20th Congressional District Art Competition, a prestigious event that highlights top high school artists across the country.

Kimberly Campbell earned first place for her charcoal drawing titled “Sibling Beginnings.” Her win includes a cash prize, a trip to Washington, D.C., and the honor of having her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for an entire year.

Daniela Vargas secured second place for her oil painting “Mal de Ojo,” which will be exhibited in Congressman Joaquin Castro’s Washington, D.C., office.

Both students are taught by art teacher Yma Luis, whose class helped produce a clean sweep of the top awards.

The annual competition is designed to recognize and encourage artistic talent among high school students nationwide.

For these two seniors, their creativity is now headed to the nation’s capital — a canvas that doesn’t get much bigger.
