City officials confirmed the last-minute cancellation of the downtown San Antonio event.
SAN ANTONIO — A planned Cinco de Mayo celebration in downtown San Antonio has been called off just days before it was set to begin.
The event, scheduled for Tuesday evening at Market Square, was expected to feature mariachi music, Folklórico dancing, local vendors and street food.
But over the weekend, the City of San Antonio updated its announcement, stating simply: the event has been canceled.
The change came less than 48 hours before the celebration was set to kick off.
Officials have not provided a reason for the cancellation, leaving many to speculate whether recent severe weather played a role. Storms swept through the area earlier in the week, though the forecast heading into Tuesday appears mostly warm and dry.
We reached out to the City of San Antonio leaders, but they have not responded to requests for additional details.
Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 — a historic underdog win that continues to be celebrated with culture, music and community events.
For now, though, one of the city’s planned festivities won’t be part of this year’s celebration.
