Driver arrested after 100 mph chase through Bexar County, DPS says

A 20-year-old Poteet man was arrested after leading DPS troopers on a chase topping 100 mph through Bexar County before surrendering peacefully.

SAN ANTONIO — A routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase across Bexar County on Thursday morning, ending with the arrest of a 20-year-old man from Poteet.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a Texas Anti-Gang trooper attempted to stop a white 2021 Chevrolet Camaro around 9:30 a.m. near Bandera Road and Loop 410 after observing a traffic violation.

Instead of pulling over, the driver sped away.

DPS officials say the suspect drove at speeds exceeding 100 mph, weaving through multiple parts of Bexar County and taking back roads in an attempt to evade troopers and the SAPD Eagle helicopter.

The pursuit came to an end near Five Palms Drive and Old Pearsall Road on San Antonio’s Southwest Side.

Troopers say the driver stopped on his own and was taken into custody without incident.

“Anytime someone’s driving over 100 miles per hour, you’re putting everyone on the roadway at risk,” DPS Public Information Officer Orlando De Luna Jr. said.

Investigators say the Camaro was not reported stolen, and the driver did not appear to be intoxicated. No weapons, narcotics or other contraband had been found in the vehicle as of Thursday afternoon.

The suspect, identified only as a 20-year-old Hispanic man from Poteet, is expected to face a charge of evading arrest with a motor vehicle.

No injuries to troopers or members of the public were reported.

DPS credited assistance from the San Antonio Police Department and its Eagle helicopter unit for helping bring the pursuit to a safe conclusion.
