Flooding leaves roads closed, rescues performed after heavy San Antonio storms

More than 30 street closures remained Tuesday after flash flooding and multiple high-water rescues.

SAN ANTONIO — Monday’s downpour left behind flooded roads, canceled Fiesta events and a busy night for first responders across San Antonio.

The city was under four separate flash flood warnings that lasted until 11 p.m., as heavy rain moved through the area.

According to the City of San Antonio Public Works Department, more than 30 street closures remained in place Tuesday morning due to high water.

One of the most visible closures was Interstate 35 at Salado Creek, where barricades blocked traffic because of standing water.

Other commonly affected areas included Weidner Road and O’Connor Road on the northeast side, along with Encino Park Road, Southwell Road and Hollyhock Road on the northwest side of town.

Emergency crews also stayed busy. San Antonio first responders performed more than a dozen high-water rescues during the storms.

One rescue near Pinn Road and Highway 151 required firefighters to use a ladder truck to reach and save two people.

The storms also disrupted Fiesta plans.

Officials canceled the Eva’s Heroes “Ain’t Gonna Resta ’Til After Fiesta” Dance and the DisabiliTA SA Celebration Day.

Drivers are urged to use caution around barricades and remember the warning repeated every storm season: Remember, turn around, don’t drown.
