Major apartment fire on West Bitters Road displaces residents

Firefighters battled heavy flames from outside after intense conditions forced a defensive attack.

SAN ANTONIO — A major apartment fire Sunday morning on San Antonio’s north side has displaced multiple residents and left at least half of one building a total loss.

According to the San Antonio Fire Department, the call came in around 7:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 400 block of West Bitters Road.

When crews arrived, they found extensive fire on the first and second floors of a two-story apartment building. A second alarm was immediately requested as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Due to intense fire conditions, crews transitioned to a defensive attack, using ladder trucks to fight the flames from outside the building.

Officials say no residents are unaccounted for.

One person was evaluated and treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

At least half of the affected building is considered a total loss, and all residents from the impacted section will be displaced.

Apartment management was on scene assisting with relocation efforts, while the American Red Cross was placed on standby if needed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
