Man shot dead by robbery suspect in skull ski mask at convenience store in Fredericksburg

The suspect is still at large and considered armed and dangerous.

FREDERICKSBURG, Texas — A man was shot and killed by a suspect wearing a skull ski mask at a convenience store in Fredericksburg on Tuesday, according to police.

The Fredericksburg Police Department said they responded to an aggravated robbery at the Kwikcheck Convenience Store at 1001 South State Highway 16 around 11:47 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim, Arthur Cortez, 48, of Fredericksburg, with a gunshot wound and began first aid. He was later pronounced deceased by authorities.

The store clerk told police that the suspect entered the store, went to the back where he put on a white skull mask, and then returned to the front where he fired his weapon, hitting the victim. The suspect then allegedly demanded the money from the cash register, then left the store on foot.

The store clerk was not harmed during the robbery.

Officials reviewed the surveillance video and saw the suspect entering the store wearing a dark-colored hooded long-sleeve shirt or light-weight jacket, ball cap, blue jeans, and gloves carrying a duffel bag. Police say he returned from the back of the store wearing a white-colored skull mask and holding a weapon.

The suspect is still at large and considered armed and dangerous.

If anyone has any information about the robbery, please contact the Fredericksburg Police Department at (830) 997-7585 and ask to speak to a Detective.

This is a developing story.
