Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones delivers first State of the City address

The mayor tackled major issues including economic growth, housing and controversial local projects.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio’s mayor took to the stage Tuesday for a major milestone in her tenure in the city’s top job.

Gina Ortiz Jones delivered her first State of the City address Tuesday, nearly 10 months after taking office, speaking before the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

City leaders say the address was expected to focus on key priorities like economic development and the city budget, but it’s also expected to touch on several high-profile and sometimes controversial topics.

Among them: Project Marvel, the Ready to Work program and the proposed ICE detention facility on the city’s east side.

The mayor has recently taken action on several fronts, including releasing plans aimed at expanding housing for vulnerable residents and increasing access to childcare and early education.

She has also navigated challenges involving both state and federal issues, from local projects like rainbow sidewalks to efforts to secure funding for a new VA facility.

One of the most closely watched topics is the proposed ICE processing center. In a recent letter, Ortiz Jones urged the Department of Homeland Security to reconsider plans to convert a warehouse into a detention facility, citing concerns over transparency and community impact.

There was also expected to be updates on Project Marvel, as well as ongoing discussions involving the San Antonio Spurs and a reported financial dispute tied to a failed Major League Soccer deal.
